Old snaps of Kilembe

I recieved the nicest email from one of the first police officers in Kilembe.  He sent me some great pics from the 50′s.  Below is the Anglican church.

And above is one of the first docs who worked for the mines.  I’m guessing medical conditions weren’t that different.

Alot of the original buildings of the mines are still standing.  The houses below look pretty familiar.

The equator sign is the same one Sally and I took our picture at last year.

    Hello,
I am intrigued by your photos of the Kilembe Mines Hospital. I was born there in July 23,1958. My father, Patrick O’Regan was working at the mines. My mother, Kay O’Regan (birthname: Agatha Catherine Wait) died on August 3, 1958. I understand she was buried in Fort Portal the next day.

I’m trying to secure information about my family. Both parents are deceased. I am married and living in Coronado (San Diego) California, USA.

    Thank you so much.

What a super article. I was a youngt boy (8 years old) back in the late 50′s when my late dad (Derek Wilson) worked there as a new graduate from the Cambourne School of Mines. My late mother – Kotie – ran the typing pool if I remember corectly. My memories are vivid still. The school (1 teacher), the mine club, Elephants walking through the valley – Buffalo on the golf course – speaking Swahele as well as any local – week-end trips to QE Park, – Lke Edward – Lake George – fishing on the Kasinga canal (SP?) – the train jouney through the rift valey to Kampala – a trip up the Nile on a barge pushing paddle steamer – the fantastic thunderstorms. What memories. Thanks so much for sharing those fotos. Peter Wilson.

Was astonished to see the picture of Dr Baroda as he delivered me on 5 November 1956 in the Hospital on the mines. My father was Sidney Dowsett who was the chief engineer on the Mine and my mother Sheila Dowsett (Skelton) started and ran the school. My sister Susan Veronica Skelton who was born in 1952 was a school there before we returned to England in 1960. If anyone has any news/contact with the headmaster of the school or anyone who recalls my parents I would be grateful if you could contact me.
